Crabs with beach trash homes by Shawn Miller

Meet Edison! A blueberry hermit crab found naturally using a incandescent light bulb screw as a protective home. This is a great example of adaptive behavior. This is becoming a common sight on our beautiful beaches . I often find large amounts of single use items washed ashore on the Island of Okinawa. Common items washed ashore are plastic bags, forks, knifes, spoons, twist top caps, plastic bottles, razors, lighters, flip-flops, rope and cigarette butts. The hermit crab is one of the few animals that can successfully adapt with our waste. Our trash is becoming a serious problem on our shorelines! Its time to act!
