In this article:

In this series of articles, we will go through one by one, the recommended lens for all APS-C users. With it as a guide, you will be able to start building your own lens system. In this article, we will learn more about the wide-angle prime lens EF35mm f/2 IS USM. (Reported by: Ryosuke Takahashi)

Fast prime lens ideal for portraits and street photography

Characterized by a bright maximum aperture, this wide-angle prime lens has an angle of view that is equivalent to about 56mm in the 35mm format. With a circular aperture that becomes almost a perfect circle when the aperture is stopped down, as well as a large bokeh effect created by the bright f/2 aperture, this lens is an ideal choice for portraits and street photography. The EF35mm f/2 IS USM performs well under low-light conditions, thanks to the IS function with a correction effect equivalent to about four shutter-speed stops. Also, the bright maximum aperture produces a bright viewfinder image, which makes it easy to check the composition and perform manual focusing at a dimly-lit location.

At a Glance!

  1. Large bokeh created by a bright aperture
  2. Powerful IS function

f/2

FL: 35mm/ Aperture-priority AE (1/25 sec., f/2, -0.7EV)/ ISO 400/ WB: Auto

Boasting a collection of historical heritage, lights are dim inside this art museum to prevent the exhibits from deteriorating, and the use of flash and tripod is also prohibited. Thanks to the resolving power of the lens and the excellent correction effect of the IS function, the decorations on the carriage and the angel's painting are clearly visible.

f/11

FL: 35mm/ Aperture-priority AE (1/200 sec., f/11)/ ISO 100/ WB: Auto

Stopping down the aperture produces a sharp image. The resolving power is so high that you can identify the seams between the stones and the details of the sculptures. Chromatic aberrations are also minimized.
