I encountered this Lar gibbon on my trip to Teruntum Park Gibbon Island in Kuantan, Malaysia. Over the course of the day, it eventually grew comfortable with my presence so as to not be bothered by my attempts to capture it on camera. Also known as the White-handed gibbon, the Lar gibbon is an endangered species on the IUCN Red List, due to hunting and habitat loss. Currently, no population estimates are available for Malaysia, Indonesia and Myanmar. I took several decent shots during that trip, but this particular photograph is my favorite because the way the gibbon is backlit in relation to its surroundings captures its aesthetic perfectly. I only hope this image will enhance the viewers’ appreciation of this versatile primate and raise concern and awareness around conservation efforts.
