On 10 April 2019, Canon announced the EOS 200D II. It features a small, lightweight body that is power-packed with Canon’s latest DIGIC 8 image processor, an enhanced AF system, as well as a host of other features that are poised to make shooting easy and fun for new and casual shooters. Canon’s first DSLR with the new DIGIC 8
The successor to the EOS 200D (released 2017), the EOS 200D II features an APS-C format CMOS sensor with 24.1 effective megapixels, supported by the new DIGIC 8 image processor. This makes it capable of delivering high-resolution images.
The DIGIC 8 processor has also enabled 4K 24P/25P movie shooting.
The native still-shooting ISO speed of up to ISO 25,600 (expandable to ISO 51,200) is sufficient for shooting clear, blur-free images in low-light conditions, such as at night or indoors.
4 reasons to love the EOS 200D II
1. Improved AF performance and functionality
Getting the focus right helps to draw your viewer’s attention to the right places. The autofocus (AF) function on a camera is important because it provides an easier way to establish focus on your subjects.
The EOS 200D II comes with enhanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF performance and functionality during Live View shooting, the result of support from the DIGIC 8 image processor. These include:
- Eye Detection AF during Servo AF and Movie Servo AF—convenient for portrait photography.
- Up to 3,975 AF frame positions to choose from for AF area manual selection.
- An EV-4 low-light focus limit (when using an f/1.2 lens) compared to the EOS 200D’s EV-2. In other words, the AF works in scenes that are darker than what the EOS 200D’s AF could handle.
2. It’s easy to get creative with it
Taking pictures is fun, but what’s just as fun is making your photos uniquely yours. The EOS 200D II is the first EOS DSLR camera to include Creative Assist. This feature makes it easy even for beginners change the look of their photos: Select the effect that you want, choose how much effect you want to apply, and the camera will choose the correct settings.
It works in real-time, which means that you can check details like the degree of background blur (bokeh), brightness and colour vividness on the rear LCD monitor before you press the shutter button.
Creative Assist comes with a number of presets to help you achieve different looks and effects. Simply choose the look that you want to recreate, select the intensity, and the camera will select the most appropriate settings.
The Creative Assist menu shown on the rear LCD monitor during OVF shooting is also simple and easy to navigate.
3. The optical viewfinder
An optical viewfinder (OVF) presents images in real time—what you see in real life is what you get, with no display time lag. This makes it ideal for capturing fast-moving subjects, such as children and pets. Shooting with the OVF with the EOS 200D II also gives a continuous shooting speed of up to 5 frames per second (fps) during both One-Shot AF and AI Servo AF, allowing you to take a string of shots as your subject moves, and choose the best one from them.
Bonus: As the OVF consumes less power, shooting with it also makes the battery last much longer. We’re looking at approximately 1630 shots on a single charge (without flash), versus approximately 350 shots during Live View shooting.
4. It’s small, light, handy and comes in three colours
The EOS 200D II inherits the same petite body size as the EOS 200D (122.4 × 92.6 × 69.8mm). However, it is a few grams lighter—the black and silver versions are 449g, whereas the white version is 451g (weights include battery and memory card). As such, it has taken over the EOS 200D’s title as the world’s lightest* APS-C format DSLR camera equipped with a movable (Vari-angle) LCD monitor.
*As of 9 April 2019. For black/silver versions. According to a Canon survey.
The EOS 200D II will be available in a kit with the EF-S18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens.
