Mainstay lens offers improved optical performance with 1 more aspheric lens element and use of ASC
Canon launched the interchangeable lens EF24-105mm f/4L IS II USM on 25 August 2016. The sales launch date has yet to be confirmed.
This standard zoom lens, compatible with 35mm full-frame sensors, is the successor to the EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, which was launched together with EOS 5D in 2005. The lens is the latest addition to Canon’s high-grade L-series (Luxury) of lenses, and is also included in the lens kit for the EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR, launched on the same day.
Canon has another lens with the same focal range, the EF24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, launched in 2014.
The EF24-105mm f/4L IS II USM adopts a lens construction of 17 elements in 12 groups. Optical performance has been improved with an increase in the number of aspheric lens elements from 3 to 4. Ghosting is reduced with the use of ASC (Air Sphere Coating), which was also used in models such as the EF11-24mm f/4L USM.
Note that the single Super Ultra Low Dispersion (Super UD) lens element, used in models to date, have been discontinued on this model. The image stabilization effect of the Image Stabilizer (IS) unit is 4 shutter speed stops, an improvement from the existing 2.5 shutter speed stops (both based on CIPA standards). The fluorine coating makes it easy to wipe away any grime on the lens.
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 0.45m throughout the entire zoom range and maximum magnification of 0.24x (at telephoto end). It comes with 10 aperture blades and uses circular aperture. The lens has dimensions of 83.5mm x 118mm, weighs approximately 795g and has a filter size of 77mm in diameter.
