Canon has always been at the forefront of imaging technology for over 80 years and the birth of the EOS R system is a testimony of our pursuit of innovation and universality in achieving optical excellence.
In this digital era, the essence of image expression is still defined by the lens's ability to capture light.
It is by this definition that this new system was created to realise not just the ideal lens design but also achieve high-spec data transmission between the body and lens. The outcome is unprecedented image resolution, enhanced usability and expanded possibilities in the world of photography.
The mount on the EOS R enables the RF Lenses to achieve peak optical performance.
Large 54mm diameter
Short flange focal distance of 20mm
High-capacity, high-speed data transmission system
This mount provides an extended freedom in optical design and future expandability while offering you flexibility with existing EF & EF-S lenses.
The new R mount is capable of transmitting a massive volume of data between the camera and lens, allowing to achieve superior quality of stills and movies with never done before capability of correcting images as you shoot.

The Future of Photography
A new imaging system that expands the current bounds of image expression and the range of shooting.
"The ideal lens was what Canon has strived for. This new mount, and the 35mm full-frame mirrorless structure were at the minimum distance to achieving our ideals. "

The Core of the EOS R System
At the heart of the EOS R system lies the new mount communication system is one of the major features of EOS R system and the RF mount.
"By being able to place a lens with a large diameter close to the focal plane, the degree of freedom of optical design is enhanced dramatically. The four lenses developed as the first stage of the RF lenses have realised these advantages.”
Koji Yoshida Image Communication Business Operations ICB Optical Products Development Centre Deputy Senior General Manager
Promises of the New Mount Communications Mount System
Expand the power of expressions in your photos with EOS R’s enhanced stabilisation and operability.
"With near real-time high-speed, communication and communication command innovation, it is now possible to use the in-camera Digital Lens Optimizer and real-time display of shooting distance information on all RF lenses. I think these are straightforward messages to the user that the EOS R system expands the possibilities of expression."

DUAL PIXEL CMOS AF
EXCELLENT MOVIE SHOOTING FUNCTIONALITY
Large-diameter, high-resolution RF lenses
All Canon RF lenses offer extremely high-quality imaging performance throughout the entire image. Prime lenses can achieve a full open aperture of f/1.2 while zoom lenses can provide a constant f/2 brightness throughout its zoom range.
The EOS R system opens up new possibilities to capture images in high resolution, with more subtle details and beautiful bokeh. All this allows you to express photographic nuances that were not possible before.
Wider AF coverage; Approx. 88% vertically x 100% horizontally
The area covered by autofocus has been expanded to allow you to use AF even when composing pictures in which subject is in a corner of the frame.
DUAL PIXEL CMOS AF
The system was developed to allow you to take AF-based photos with even greater speed and simplicity than the EOS system. AF photos can be taken in a wider range of shooting conditions, making use of the advantages of the Dual Pixel CMOS AF.
High-precision electronic viewfinder
Never miss another shot with the high-resolution 0.5-inch, 3.69 million-pixel OLED EVF. Everything you will need to compose the perfect shot is available at a glance. Relevant data is displayed in the EVF so that you can comfortably perform everything from shooting preparation, to shooting, settings adjustment, and playback while looking through the viewfinder.
The system provides enhanced usability through continued innovation setting new standards while still fulfilling the demands of the generation.
4K frame grab
EXCELLENT MOVIE SHOOTING FUNCTIONS
The system offers users balanced functionality to support both still photos and movies. It includes advanced features video features for both video enthusiasts and professionals working in movie production.

PORTRAITS & WEDDING
WILDLIFE & NATURE
ABILITY TO SHOOT IN LOW-LIGHT CONDITIONS. The bright EVF allows users to see the subject even in dimly lit conditions. AF functions effectively even in lighting conditions as low as EV-6 (when the aperture is set to f/1.2). The Dual Sensing IS is effective in correcting for camera-shake as cameras using 5-stop faster shutter speeds, allowing users to perform hand-held shooting in a wider range of conditions.
INCREASED IMAGE COMPOSITION FLEXIBILITY. Wide AF area allows users to keep subjects located near the edges of the picture in focus, even without the use of the focus lock. The small distance between AF points allows for the focal point to be set at almost any point within the frame, thus greatly increases the freedom of composition.
ADAPTABILITY TO DIVERSE SHOOTING STYLES. The system supports a wide range of photo shooting styles. For example, the EVF provides histogram and shooting data that can be monitored in real-time, making it easier to shoot in backlit conditions or to photograph bright subjects (such as a white wedding dress). The variable-angle LCD increases the flexibility of shooting styles.
RESPONSIVE SPEED & SATISFYING SHOOTING PERFORMANCE. The wide AF area and new AF tracking algorithm achieve wider and more-precise tracking of the subject’s face than that of AF systems based on an optical viewfinder. A high sensitivity of ISO 40000 and capability of high-speed continuous shooting (approx. 5 fps) allows users to take shots in dimly lit indoor sporting venues.
SILENT SHOOTING CAPABILITY. A silent shutter mode is available for single-shot photos. Still images (8-megapixel quality still photos) can be extracted from 4K 30p movie footage. All this coupled with a lightweight, dust-resistant and moisture-resistant compact body makes the camera ideal for outdoor shooting in various weather conditions ensuring users will not miss out on the shot.
In addition to the conventional battery grip features, this accessory adds a battery charging function. This accessory also gives you the option to hold the camera in a vertical orientation (portrait) for still photos, and comfortably controls the camera when shooting longer movie clips.
This illustrates EOS R’s compatibility with all existing Canon products.
