I have been a Canon DSLR user for many years, but this was my first underwater session with a Canon compact. From the moment I got my hands on it, it felt great; I just loved the grip, the solid metal body, and the ergonomic dials. The camera gives you access to the most vital functions in an incredibly natural way, adjusting the mode and the exposure compensation is incredibly easy, which is so important when you are shooting underwater – every few metres the light changes, but this little gem makes compensating for that a breeze.

I was impatient to get the camera in the water, and luckily had an opportunity on a freediving trip to Gili Trawangan, Lombok, Indonesia. I was a little dismayed, however, as the conditions in the water were not perfect. Thank goodness for the powerful underwater white balance mode. It brought the colour back wonderfully, even though there wasn’t much light underwater on the day.
I am an artist, a perfectionist, and have very specific ideas for the images I make. It is important to me to have a camera that can provide the technical back-up to help me realise my vision. The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II might be small, but it has the necessary “guts” to get the job done: an incredibly high quality 20.1-million effective-pixel from the CMOS sensor, the DIGIC 7 image processor, which brings improved sharpening and high ISO noise reduction. Creative control is also heightened with the RAW image format and the bright f/1.8-2.8, 24-100mm zoom lens, which means each time the shutter fires, it captures a huge quantity of information, even in challenging conditions.
The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II is a perfect compact camera for recreational underwater photographers but also a perfect second camera for professional DSLR shooters like myself.
The Underwater Housing (WP-DC55) for the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II is sold separately.
