The EOS 5D Mark IV, the latest release in the EOS 5D series, is a long-awaited model not only by users who have been photographing with Canon cameras for years, but also by those who are looking for a new full-frame DSLR camera. Its enhanced dynamic range and gradation reproduction capability have helped to widen the user’s scope of photographic expression. Brightened by the setting sun in the background, the sunflowers glowed beautifully. Thanks to the wide dynamic range, the EOS 5D Mark IV is capable of reproducing the subject in exact detail even under harsh shooting conditions such as the one in this example.

The EOS 5D Mark IV has a resolution of approximately 30.4 megapixels with a relatively wide pixel pitch. This, combined with the DIGIC 6+ image processor, delivers a wide dynamic range and rich colour gradations. Particularly impressive is the depiction of shadow areas – I was amazed by the camera’s ability to reproduce even scenes with high contrast in brightness without any black crush.

A golden wheat field that is illuminated by the setting sun. While the scene was backlit with a slightly high contrast, the image captured was clear with no blowout or black crush from the highlights to the shadows.

 

Another noteworthy point is the low level of noise, which makes high ISO speeds such as 6400 and 12800 seem like any other ISO speed settings that you commonly use. The high sensitivity of the camera holds the ability to change the look of the finished image, and enables handheld shots to be taken with great ease even in a low-light scene. It has the potential of producing new styles of video expression that defy conventional wisdom.

Straw rolls lying on a field – a typical sight that you would encounter in Hokkaido in summer. While the weather may be unexpectedly hot, the breeze is very refreshing indeed. A clear and vivid photo is best suited for conveying such a scene.

The yellow cutleaf coneflower blossoms lend a colourful touch to the white flowers of the buckwheat field. Here, I included the yellow blossoms in the foreground blur in between the white flowers. With the EOS 5D Mark IV, the shoot was a very pleasant experience as it allowed me to control the active AF points freely with the touch screen.
