Light Up Your World – Canon PowerShot G5 X

Electronic View Finder

Using a 2.36-million dot high-definition organic LED (OLED) screen, this new addition to the body design means you no longer have to squint when shooting in bright conditions. Eliminating standard environmental problems like glare, the viewfinder also features a 22mm eye point — that means no vignetting even if you wear spectacles.

The best part? The camera automatically disables the LCD screen when you’re shooting through the EVF, meaning you can shoot in darker environments (like at concerts or plays) without having to worry about the glow from your screen.

In-build Flash

Shooting in dark conditions? The PowerShot G5 X comes with a built-in pop-up flash (much like the DSLRs) that can be used to provide additional illumination at a range of 50cm-7m. Very handy, especially for travelers who don’t want the hassle of bringing additional equipment.

If the built-in flash isn’t enough, feel free to mount your own external flash with the added hot shoe located above the EVF.

Smart Lens

The 4.2x optical zoom lens features both wide-angle and short telephoto focal length range, with an f/1.8-2.8 maximum aperture paired with image stabilising capabilities that make handheld shooting in low light conditions a breeze. It allows for more light to enter the lens, meaning you can keep your ISO sensitivity lower, and avoid excess image noise in your shots. The lens also features a build-in neutral density filter for extra exposure control if you’re playing around with the depth of field.

Exposure Compensation

Possibly one of the handiest features yet, the PowerShot G5 X has a dedicated exposure control dial conveniently located right next to the shutter-release. Never fumble through menu settings again when all you need is a quick exposure adjustment, whatever your lighting situation is.

Night Shooting

Finally, the camera offers dedicated Star Modes and functions that can be used to capture photos and videos of the night time sky with enhanced brilliance and clarity. For even greater control over the final image, play around with supporting functions like Night Display, Colour Adjustment and star Emphasis.

All images are shot with PowerShot G5 X.
