Taking great night shots

Good guy Phil Hart, winner of the Wide-Field category of the Astrofest David Malin Awards 2014, generously shares tips on how to get started with night sky photography (aka astrophotography) in this video with Canon Australia.

We love it when talented photographers share their tips and techniques in simple lay-man terms and even more so when they say you don't need sophisticated and expensive equipment. Turns out all you need for taking beautiful photographs of the night sky, stars and moon is a DSLR, a sturdy tripod and maybe a remote shutter (useful but otherwise optional).

Trust this guy; Hart has been shooting stars for more than 20 years.

Without giving too much away, Phil covers the basics of capturing night shots, and moves on to capturing different effects and awe-inspiring time-lapse photographs. Be sure to watch the video!

Phil Hart

Phil Hart has been taking photos of the night sky in his free time for over 20 years. He conducts night sky photography workshops in Melbourne and recently released his e-book, Shooting Stars: How to Photograph the Moon and and Stars with your DSLR.
