Picture Style is a function available only on DSLRs that allows you to change the style of the photo as if you were changing the film. In the EOS series, you can choose from any of the 7 styles available. (Reported by: Ryosuke Takahashi)

Digitization allows the photo style to be chosen easily

Just like changing the film in a film camera, you can change to various photo styles using the “Picture Style” function in digital cameras. In previous DSLRs, the Picture Style was determined by adjusting individual settings such as saturation, contrast, etc. However, Picture Style allows the user to choose the desired style from the 7 styles available without having to make fine adjustments. Under the “Auto” Picture Style, the scene being shot is analysed and the colour is automatically adjusted to the optimum setting. If you choose a Picture Style to suit the subject, you can achieve the desired photo finishing.

    AUTO

The scene being shot is automatically analysed by the camera to achieve the optimal colour. In particular, blue skies, greenery, evening scenes, etc., can be captured in vivid colours.

    STANDARD

The basic colours of an EOS DSLR can be used for most subjects. With higher saturation and colour density, this function can be used without the need for further processing during printing.

    PORTRAIT

This style is suitable for capturing the skin colour and texture of women and children etc. Compared to the “Standard” Picture Style, the skin complexion appears better and smoother.

    NEUTRAL

This style captures the subject with a low contrast and saturation. Compared to other picture styles, the light and hue are more suppressed. This is suitable for shooting scenes which have a strong bright and dark contrast.

    LANDSCAPE

As its name implies, this style is suitable for taking landscapes. With a high sharpness and contrast, it captures green vegetation and blue skies brilliantly. Faraway scenery is also captured clearly.

    FAITHFUL

This style reproduces the colours of the subject faithfully under direct light. It can accurately capture the colours of subjects such as products, the fur of animals, etc.

    MONOCHROME

This style has a toning effect similar to monochrome film. Besides just black and white, you can also change the style to a sepia, blue, or red monochrome. To change the monochrome toning effect, change the “Toning Effect” under the option menu when selecting “Monochrome” as the Picture Style.

How to Set the Picture Style

Press the Picture Style button to display the menu and use the cross keys to change the Picture Style. If you are in the Special Scene Shooting Modes, you can select any one of the available Picture Styles.

To select a monochrome style with a sepia tone, choose “Monochrome” from “Picture Style” in the menu. You can then select a desired toning effect such as sepia, blue, red, etc.

    Ryosuke Takahashi
