On 29 August 2017, Canon announced the launch of the EOS M100, a compact and lightweight mirrorless camera that features a CMOS sensor with 24.2 effective megapixels, the DIGIC 7 image processor and Dual Pixel CMOS AF. (Reported by: Makoto Suzuki (Digital Camera Watch))

The EOS M100 is a compact, lightweight mirrorless camera and the successor to the EOS M10, which was released in October 2015. While it is geared at entry mirrorless users, the inclusion of powerful core technologies such as a 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, DIGIC 7 image processor and Dual Pixel CMOS AF makes it comparable with higher-end mirrorless cameras such as the EOS M5 and EOS M6.

While the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system has become a staple on Canon’s DSLR cameras and is also available on the EOS M5 and EOS M6, the EOS M100 is the first entry-level mirrorless camera to feature it. In this system, all of the pixels on the image sensor are embedded with two phase-detection photodiodes, which makes autofocusing faster and more precise. This lets users easily capture sharp shots of moving objects during Live View shooting.

The EOS M100 will be sold in three kits:
- Single lens kit (consisting of the EF-M15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM, a standard zoom lens,)
- Double zoom lens kit (EF-M15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM and a telephoto zoom lens, the EF-M55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM)
- Double lens kit (EF-M15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens and the EF-M22mm f/2.0 STM, a prime lens)

The EOS M100 has a maximum native ISO speed of ISO 25600, and supports movie recording in Full HD 60p quality. While the lens mount is the Canon EF-M mount, EF and EF-S lenses can also be attached by using the EF-EOS M mount adapter, sold separately.

Continuous shooting speed is up to approximately 4 fps with AF tracking, and up to approximately 6.1 fps with AF lock. The shutter speed ranges from 1/4000 seconds to 30 seconds, with X-sync at 1/200 seconds.

The EOS M100 features an enhanced version of the Creative Assist mode, which has been well-received on the EOS M10. In addition to existing ‘Blur – Sharpen’ (aperture) and ‘Clear – Vivid’ (colour saturation) parameters that users can adjust with a slider while previewing the image on the Live View screen, there is also a new white balance parameter for adjusting ‘Color 2 (magenta/green)’.

Connectivity features include Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth low energy technology. Transfer of image files, remote Live View shooting and geotagging can be done via Canon’s proprietary smartphone app, Camera Connect.

One new feature that is now possible through Bluetooth (also via the Camera Connect app) is the constant transmission of GPS information from a paired smartphone to the camera. When the shutter is released on the camera, the smartphone will transmit the GPS information to the camera for geotagging of the image.

The 1.04 million-dot, 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD monitor is tiltable up to approximately 180 degrees upwards.

The EOS M100 uses Battery Pack LP-E12, and can shoot up to 295 shots in a single charge.

Compatible memory media includes SDXC/SDHC/SD cards (compatible with UHS-I).

External dimensions are 108.2mm × 67.1mm × 35.1mm (W × H × D), and the weight is approximately 266g (body only).
