On 15 February 2017, Canon announced its new lens for APS-C cameras—the EF-S18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. While it provides the same angle-of-view as its predecessor, it boasts a more compact body size and improved image stabilization. (Reported by: Makoto Suzuki (Digital Camera Watch))

New standard zoom lens boasts smaller body, up to 4 stops’ of image stabilization

On 15 February 2017, Canon announced its new lens for APS-C format cameras: The EF-S18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM.

A standard zoom lens that is also one of the kit lenses for the EOS 800D and the EOS 77D, announced on the same day, the EF-S18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM has a 35mm film-equivalent focal length range of 29-88mm. It boasts a body length that is 13.4mm shorter than its predecessor model, the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM.

Made possible by reducing the maximum aperture at the wide-angle end from f/3.5 to f/4, the more compact body size is supposed to be less intimidating to subjects on the other side of the camera.

Image stabilization has been improved to 4 stops. Image resolution is the same as its predecessor, as is the 58mm filter diameter.

The lens construction consists of 12 elements in 10 groups, with 1 aspherical lens element and a 7-blade circular aperture. Minimum shooting distance is 0.25m, and external specifications are 66.5×61.8mm (maximum diameter × total length). The lens weighs approximately 215g.
