Even higher image quality with this third generation of a staple pro lens

On 25 August 2016, Canon announced their interchangeable lens, the EF16-35mm f/2.8L III USM. Estimated sales start date has yet to be announced.

This ultra-wide angle zoom lens is compatible with 35mm full-frame DSLRs and is the latest addition to the lineup of Canon's L-series (Luxury) lenses. It is the third successive generation after the EF16-35mm f/2.8L USM (released 2001) and the EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM (released 2007).

Other ultra-wide angle zoom lenses with similar focal ranges in Canon’s current lineup include the EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM (released 2014) and the EF17-40mm f/4L USM (released 2004).

The optical composition of this lens consists of 16 elements in 11 groups. It features two large-diameter double-aspheric GMo (glass-moulded) lenses, a ground aspheric lens, and two UD (Ultra Low Dispersion) lenses. This lens provides higher image quality from the center of the screen to its periphery.

Similar to the EF11-24mm f/4L USM, both SWC (Subwavelength Structure Coating) and ASC (Air Sphere Coating) have been used as lens coatings, in order to suppress flaring and ghosting. The body features a dust-proof, drip-proof structure, and a fluorine coating has been applied to the lens surfaces to allow stains to be easily wiped off.

The closest focusing distance throughout the focal range is 0.28m, with a maximum magnification of 0.25x (telephoto end). It is equipped with 9 circular aperture blades, and takes 82mm filters. Its dimensions measure ø88.5 x 127.5mm, and it weighs approximately 790g.
