On 5 November 2025, Canon announced the CR-N400, a new indoor PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) camera that combines 4K 60p output*, Canon’s longest zoom on a PTZ camera, and professional output capabilities including 12G-SDI within a compact body. Built for professional streaming, studio and live production, and remote workflows, it is a versatile solution for those who want a compact system that balances affordability and functionality. In this article, we highlight three of its most outstanding features.

*Actual output: 3840 x 2160/59.94p. Effective number of pixels: approx. 7.9 megapixels

In this article:

1. 4K 60p*—fully unleashed with 12G-SDI output

The CR-N400 is Canon’s second PTZ camera to offer 4K 60p* output, the first being the higher-end CR-N700. Equipped with a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor that balances outstanding image quality with a smaller, more affordable body, and powered by the DIGIC DV7 processor, it provides a mid-tier option that enables more users to enjoy high-definition, polished-looking 4K footage with smooth 60p motion.

The CR-N400’s smaller sensor contributes to its smaller form factor compared to the CR-N700, Canon’s other PTZ camera model with similar output capabilities.

The camera’s 12G-SDI output terminal offers a more reliable way to output broadcast-quality 4K 60p* video for streaming and real-time production: it supports greater transmission distances with just a single cable, allowing simplified yet stable 4K transmission beyond what HDMI can achieve. This also frees up the HDMI and 3G-SDI terminals for other uses such as monitoring or multiview streaming.

Perfect for streaming sports and dynamic action

Add more excitement to your 4K sports livestreams by positioning the CR-N400 to capture peak moments from unique angles no cameraman can go: at 60p, even fast-paced action looks smooth.

2. Multiple ways to get dynamic visuals—all from the same camera

Method 1: Zoom from wide-angle to extreme close-ups

The CR-N400 doesn’t just pan, tilt, and zoom—it takes zooming to a whole new level. In addition to seamless 20x optical zooming, it also oversamples from its sensor’s 4K output to achieve 40x Advanced Zoom during Full HD zooming. That’s the longest zoom among Canon’s remote cameras.

Canon’s excellent precision control technologies ensure that panning, tilting, and zooming movements are smooth and responsive. This was cultivated through its legacy of developing and producing network cameras.

20x Optical Zoom
The 20x optical zoom allows you to record 4K video that zooms from 35mm format equivalent focal range of 29.3 or 30mm to 601 or 616mm, depending on whether your frame frequency is 29.97/25.00/23.98Hz, or 59.94/50.00Hz*. That’s enough to go from a wide-angle overview to close-up shot from the back of a lecture theatre!
*IS OFF or Standard IS ON

40x Full HD Advanced Zoom
Shoot in Full HD to unleash the approximately 40x Advanced Zoom: the longest zoom among Canon’s remote PTZ cameras. This extends the zoom to a 35mm format equivalent focal length of 1202mm—enough for powerful extreme close-ups from the back of stadiums or larger venues. This is achieved through oversampling from the 4K sensor readout, maintaining excellent clarity with rich details.

Synchronous PTZ with presets supported
You can set the camera so that it reaches a preset target position regardless of your current position and angle of view. With support for synchronous PTZ, the camera pans, tilts, and zooms simultaneously to reach the target, allowing a quick return to the main shot or key person of interest.

Method 2: Cropped streaming

Gone are the days where you need multiple cameras shooting from the same angle just so you can get a wide view and closeups from the same scene when livestreaming. The CR-N400 is the second camera to support Multiview streaming in Full HD/HD after the CR-700, and the first to support vertical cropping. This allows you to get up to two different cropped outputs simultaneously from the same camera feed—a convenient way to make your livestreams look more dynamic.

The CR-N400 is also Canon’s first PTZ camera to support IP cropping, allowing you to take advantage of these cropped streaming capabilities even without a complex cable setup.

Mobile-friendly vertical streaming

Vertical (9:16) video has become just as important as traditional 16:9 video as audiences increasingly consume video content on smartphones and social media. The CR-N400 adds vertical cropping to its simultaneous crop output abilities, allowing traditional 16:9 video and smartphone-friendly 9:16 crop to be output simultaneously. This enables creators to livestream and produce content for different platforms and audiences at once without additional filming.

3. Advanced connectivity options

The camera features 12G-SDI, 3G-SDI, GENLOCK/SYNC and Time Code terminals, providing wide-ranging connectivity to meet diverse 4K production needs. This includes the low latency, reliability, and precision control necessary for professional live production and real-time streaming workflows.

12G-SDI + 3G-SDI: Output separate 4K 60p* and Full HD 60p video channels simultaneously

SDI ports enable the stable, low-latency output required for a reliable, professional-quality real-time feed. That’s precisely what you need for live production, and even more so for broadcast and livestreaming.

3G-SDI supports up to Full HD 60p, while 12G-SDI enables pristine 4K 60p* output. With both terminals available, you can deliver 4K and Full HD signals at once—ideal for multi-angle broadcasts, or sending a 4K master to a recorder while providing a Full HD feed for live production or monitoring.

*Actual output is 3840 x 2160/59.94p. Effective number of pixels: approx. 7.9 megapixels

Use case 1: Main line + monitoring

Use case 2: Crop streaming

When outputting Canon Log 3 video, 12G-SDI supports the application of the following LUTs without any conversion:
- Wide DR/BT.709
- Wide DR/BT.2020
- HLG/BT.2020
- PQ/BT.2020
- DCI/ DCI P3
- User LUTs

GENLOCK/SYNC and Timecode: Essential for multi-camera productions

The CR-N400’s GENLOCK/SYNC and Timecode terminals work together to make your multi-camera streams and productions smooth, frame-accurate, and glitch-free.

GENLOCK/SYNC ensures that the video signals of all your cameras are perfectly in sync, so that when you switch between different camera feeds, there are no dropped frames or delays. It’s also critical for achieving clean, artifact-free results in virtual productions, or when shooting in locations involving LED walls or projectors.

Time Code syncs the timestamps of all the cameras and recorders in the system for easier coordination, making editing, post-production, and file management easier. Synced timecodes also allows more precise integration of graphics and secondary footage (such as slow-motion playbacks or pre-recorded segments) into live broadcasts and livestreams.

POE++ power supply support

POE++ enables power supply via the LAN cable, allowing power, control, and video feed with just a single cable. This streamlines the setup and reduces installation costs. The camera also comes with a DC-12V power input terminal.

UVC-compatibility: up to Full HD 30p output through USB-C

With its support for UVC, the CR-N400 can also be deployed as a very sophisticated web camera by connecting it to a PC with a USB-C cable.
