Ori Media Tests Out Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with ‘Solemn Oath’

The Utah-based duo, founder/creative director Michael Ori and VP/digital imaging technician Joey Jonaitis of Ori Media journeyed across Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, and Seoul to showcase the brilliance of the new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV through the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Seminar Tour.

The seminar held in each city had not only allowed photographers and photography enthusiasts to catch a glimpse of this DSLR powerhouse and its latest features with a live demonstration, it also illustrated the capabilities of the EOS 5D Mark IV through a short film created by Ori Media.

Named ‘Solemn Oath’, the story revolved around a wedding scene, and the director’s vision of what a marriage should be, and the love and journey of a married couple. The team shot the film entirely on the EOS 5D Mark IV, and sang its praises for features such as Dual Pixel CMOS AF (for zoom tracking/facial tracking), 4K Frame Grab, built-in Wi-Fi, and remote connect. A substantial upgrade from its predecessor the EOS 5D Mark III, this newest addition to the 5D series proved to be a powerful camera for both photographers and videographers.

One of the scenes saw the bride and groom riding a motorcycle along the road, in which the 5D Mark IV’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF’s facial tracking capability played a crucial part in capturing this scene. ‘Even when we’re shooting from a moving truck, it tracked perfectly well,’ said Michael, ‘the lighting was changing constantly, the depth of field was changing constantly, but we didn’t miss a single shot.’

Michael was impressed with the EOS 5D Mark IV’s 4K Frame Grab feature, which allowed him to extract an 8.8-megapixel still frame from the video. He could then transfer it wirelessly to other devices such as a smartphone or computer with the camera’s built-in Wi-Fi function. It works perfectly well especially in this period when the world is so closely connected via social media. ‘You can stay connected to the world right from your smartphone as you’re shooting,’ Michael added.

Michael also highlighted the Remote Connect function found in the new EOS 5D Mark IV, which he found mind-blowing.  Using the Canon Camera Connect app, it allowed photographers to capture images by controlling the camera through the phone. ‘I’m not talking about just hitting “record”, but you can also view what you’re shooting at the same time,’ he explained, ‘and you can adjust your aperture internally with the camera on your smartphone.’
