In this article:

In Lesson 5, we will learn how to apply the "bokeh" effect I have introduced in Lessons 3 and 4. Here, I will focus on bokeh expressions other than "background blur." If you intend to start using a mirrorless camera, or have just purchased a new camera, this series of articles provide easy-to-understand lessons on techniques for capturing charming photos using the EOS M, which boasts high image quality and yet is simple to operate even by beginners. By learning the basics of cameras and photos, you will be able to produce the shots you desire with ease! (Photos by: Takeshi Akaogi, Written & Organized by: Camera Biyori Editorial Department)

Q: What are the techniques that make use of "bokeh"?

A: "Background blur" is not the only type of bokeh effect you can create. Try widening the scope of your photographic expression by challenging different variations, such as "foreground blur," which blurs the area in front of the subject, and "round bokeh," which can be created using light.

(1) Soften the ambience by blurring the area in front of the subject
Capture a shot with some object included in the area before the subject you want to set focus on.

Let's Try! "Foreground Blur" Photos

The significantly blurred leaves and flowers in the foreground accentuated the photos, adding depth to them. The bokeh effect will be stronger the further the object in front is away from the point in focus.

(2) Fantastical photos with lights blurred into round shapes
"Round bokeh" can be created by significantly blurring round-shaped "point light sources," such as the light of bulbs.

Let's Try! "Round Bokeh" Photos

The light of illumination that is located away from the plane in focus appears as round-shaped bokeh. The perfect round shape of the bokeh effect is proof of a good lens.

Canon's first mirrorless camera, the EOS M, comes in four color variations (black, red, white, and silver) so you can pick one according to your preference.
