Canon has just announced its new top-of-the-line Speedlite model, the Speedlite 600EX II-RT. With upgraded heat resistance and increased number of flashes, its operability has also been improved. Additionally, a new external battery pack as an accessory has also been lined up. (Reported by: Digital Camera Watch)
Canon announced the premium clip–on flash unit, the Speedlite 600EX II-RT, the successor to the current flagship model, the Speedlite 600EX-RT. While the new model inherits the dust and water resistance and radio communication-driven wireless functionality, the maximum number of continuous flashes and operability has improved.
Revisions to the material used, the internal structure and the optical design have aided the flash unit’s heat resistance and ability to suppress increases in internal temperature. Furthermore, flash intervals are automatically adjusted to accommodate rises in temperature, therefore reducing the possibility of the flash not firing. The maximum number of flashes when using an external power source is said to have been increased by approximately 1.5 to 2 times.
Operability improvements have been made to display the charging status of the master unit on the display panel, and also to enable use of the dial as well as the Mode button to select modes and adjust the amount of light admitted manually. Previously, the Mode button had to be pushed several times, which made it easy to select an unintended mode. This has been addressed with the new improvements.
The guide number is 60m and the bounce angles are 90 degrees up, 7 degrees down, and 180 degrees left/right. The exposure control system features E-TTL II/E-TTL/TTL auto flash, manual flash, stroboscopic flash, auto external flash metering, and manual external flash metering.
The Speedlite 600EX II-RT is powered by 4 AA batteries. When using alkaline batteries the maximum number of flashes is about 100 - 700. Possible length of continuous wireless shooting through radio wave communication is approx. 9 hours.
The external dimensions are approximately 78.7×143.2×122.7mm, with a weight of approximately 435g (excluding the battery).
For accessories, the Speedlite 600EX II-RT comes bundled with Bounce Adaptor SBA-E3 and a set of colour filters (SCF-E30R1 and SCF-E30R2). Lined up as an external power source is the external battery pack CP-E4N.
