A prominent landmark in Leh is the Shanti Stupa. This white-domed chorten, located on a hilltop in Chanspa, was built by the Japanese Buddhist Bhikshu Gyomyo Nakamura and inaugurated by the 14th Dalai Lama in 1991. The stupa was created to foster world peace and celebrate 2,500 years of Buddhism.
