    • Filming in higher resolution future-proofs your footage, allowing playback in future devices and screens. Higher resolution footage gives you more pixel information work with, increasing flexibility during post-production.

    • As the hybrid approach becomes increasingly common for photographers and content creators, it is important to work with lenses that are suitable for both photography and videography. Compatible with up to 90 lenses – RF, RF-S lenses, and EF lenses via a mount adapter, EOS R system expands your creativity and delivers outstanding optical image quality.

    Full-frame vs APS-C

The EOS R Mirrorless lineup includes both full-frame and APS-C cameras. Find out what’s the difference between these two sensors.

“Full-frame” is also known as “35mm full-frame”, and it originates from the 35mm film is used in film cameras.

“APS-C” stands for “Advanced Photo System type-C”. Canon APS-C cameras have a 1.6x crop factor.

APS-C size sensor increases focal length by approximately 1.6x. When shooting with an APS-C mirrorless camera, you will achieve the telephoto effect while maintaining high pixel count.

Advantages of a Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera

    Shallower Depth of Field

A camera with a full-frame sensor when paired with a large aperture lens, gives you a more blurred background, which is ideal for shooting portraits.

    High-Quality Images

Bigger sensors capture more light, so you get rich colour, details and high-quality images.

    Superior Low Light Performance

With larger pixels, you can achieve higher quality images with lower image noise, even in low light conditions.

    Unrestricted Field-of-View

Compared to APS-C sensors that have an approx. 1.6x crop factor, full-frame sensors have an uncropped field-of-view that provide realistic image composition.

photography using the EOS R series of full-frame mirrorless cameras and RF lenses.

Advantages of an APS-C Mirrorless Camera

    EXTENDED REACH

As a result of its 1.6x crop factor, APS-C cameras offer you greater reach without compromising resolution, making it ideal for photographers who shoot wildlife and sports.

    DEEPER DEPTH OF FIELD

Since APS-C sensor cameras provide that extended reach, you do not need to shoot physically closer to your subject. This gives you a deeper depth of field, producing images with most of the details in focus – an advantage for those who shoot landscapes.

    SMALLER & LIGHT WEIGHT

Since the APS-C sensor is smaller, cameras can be made smaller and lighter – an ideal choice for street and travel photography.

RF lenses are built on the strengths of the EF system. Native lenses to the EOS R System, RF and RF-S lenses have a new lens design that promises speed, improved Optical Image Stabilization (Optical IS) and higher image quality.

The RF mount has a larger diameter, which allows wider lens elements to be placed closer to the sensor. With reduced refraction and aberrations, images captured by RF lenses have edge-to-edge sharpness with minimal light fallout.

RF lenses are compatible with both full-frame and APS-C cameras in the EOS R System.
