EOS 77D: A Closer Look at 7 Key External Design Features
The EOS 77D may have been developed with photography enthusiasts in mind, but with features such as a vari-angle LCD monitor, top LCD panel and Quick Control Dial, it boasts operability that rivals high-end models. 1. Design
An elegant design where sleek lines connect the gentle curves of each section is a feature common to all Canon EOS cameras. Once you have set up your camera, you won't forget how comfortably it fits into the palms of your hands.
Furthermore, because the EOS 77D was planned as a compact and lightweight DSLR, Canon has devised various ways of reducing the camera’s size, such as by changing the shape and specifications of the parts used in the viewfinder area, as well as the arrangement of the buttons.

The dimensions of the EOS 77D are 131mm x 99.9mm x 76.2mm (W x H x D), and it weighs 493g (body only). The camera also has a grip that is designed to be held comfortably regardless of the size of your hands.
2. Buttons
One big feature of the EOS 77D is the LCD monitor, which is used to display the current camera settings, such as the exposure and ISO speed. Many of Canon's high-end DSLRs are equipped with an LCD panel, and the fact that the EOS 77D is equipped with one is in itself a statement of the emphasis placed on operability for this camera.
Moreover, the placement of buttons such as the AF area selection button, ISO speed setting button, and LCD panel illumination button in front of the LCD panel will be familiar to users of high-end EOS cameras. The Main Dial can be found behind the shutter button.
The LCD panel is on the top right corner of the camera, whereas the Mode Dial is on the top left.
The rear buttons are mainly clustered on the right side of the LCD monitor, which adopts a vari-angle design so that operations can be completed easily with only the right hand whenever possible.
Another control to take note of is the Quick Control Dial, which is another big feature of this camera. The Quick Control Dial is a very convenient dial that can be used in manual exposure (M) in conjunction with the Main Dial to set the aperture value and shutter speed, as well as to easily set the desired exposure compensation.
Furthermore, the EOS 77D features an AF-ON button on the top right corner of its rear side. This button allows you to perform AF operations freely, separate from other functions such as shutter speed, aperture and ISO speed, and is invaluable for back-button autofocus operation.
3. Viewfinder
The optical viewfinder, which is said to be the highlight of a DSLR camera, has 0.82x magnification and 95% coverage, and uses a pentamirror design.
A display-off sensor (eye sensor) is fitted above the viewfinder so that the LCD monitor turns off when your face gets close to the eyepiece. It is envisaged that this feature will encourage users to make the most of viewfinder shooting because of its benefit such as saving power and preventing accidental operation of the touchscreen monitor.
4. LCD monitor
The LCD monitor on the rear is 3-inches wide with approximately 1.04 million dots. The vari-angle design makes it easy to shoot from your desired angle, whether it be from a high angle above head level or from a low angle close to the ground.
Moreover, because a touchscreen is used, you can select the desired point of focus by simply touching your subject on the screen, and also enable automatic shutter release when the camera is in focus during a photo shoot.
On the shooting screen, camera settings such as shutter speed, aperture value, ISO speed, exposure and image quality can be viewed at a glance. Because its specifications are common to other EOS series cameras, users familiar with such models can comfortably check the information they require.
The familiar Quick Control screen has also been retained. You can access it by pressing the Quick Control button, and rapidly change your desired settings.
An electronic level has also been included, in addition to a grid display, making for a simple but wonderful feature.
When you select "Guided" for the shooting screen menu, simple terms intended for beginners, such as "Blurred" and "Sharp", will be used in the display instead of more specialised terms.
5. Terminals
The terminals can be found at 2 locations on the left side of the body.
Under the first cover lies the remote control terminal on top and the external microphone input terminal on the bottom. The remote control terminal can be used with the RS-60E3 Remote Switch (sold separately) while the external microphone input terminal supports 3.5mm mini-stereo plugs.
Under the second cover is the Digital terminal on top and HDMI mini output terminal (Type-C) on the bottom. The Digital terminal supports the interface cable that comes with the camera.
6. Recording media slot
The EOS 77D is equipped with an SD card slot on the right side of the body, which supports SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards (the SDHC memory card and SDXC memory card are UHS-I compatible).
7. Battery
The battery compartment is on the underside of the body.
The camera uses one LP-E17 battery pack, and the LC-E17 battery charger. The number of shots that can be taken using a fully-charged battery (battery life), based on the CIPA standard, is approximately 600 shots at room temperature (23°C) or 550 shots at low temperatures (0°C) when using the viewfinder, and approximately 270 shots at room temperature or 230 shots at low temperatures in Live View photography.
EOS entry-level models were originally designed with a simplified operating system for easy operation by beginners. However, the light and compact size of the cameras soon attracted many intermediate and advanced users who would use such cameras as a second camera (or even as a main camera in some cases). Despite this, the camera’s operability left some of those users dissatisfied. As a step up from such entry-level models, the EOS 77D addresses such demands, and is equipped with an LCD panel and Quick Control Dial.
