Specialising in modern and church weddings, Singapore-based photographer Brandon Ho and his team at Pixioo boast a wealth of experience when it comes to making wedding couples happy. From pre-wedding shoot to the actual wedding day, Brandon and his teammates capture only the best and most important moments that their clients can cherish for the rest of their lives. And here are some of his wedding photography tips.

Tell us about your photography journey

Brandon: I started photography purely out of interest and as a hobby in March 2017, and shot portraits of my friends whenever we hung out. In mid 2017, I had the opportunity to shoot for several local fashion brands' look books. I had my very first wedding shoot only in late 2017 and that was how I found my mentor. Since then, I have been a second shooter for him and a few other wedding photographers whenever I do not have any bookings of my own.

How does one become a wedding photographer?

Brandon: Becoming a wedding photographer takes years of learning, doing lots of assisting with industry professionals, and getting their feedback on whether or not you are ready to hold your own wedding photoshoots.

Top tip for wedding photography?

Brandon: It is important to first build a connection with your couples so that there will not be any awkward moments.

How should one go about starting a wedding photography business?

Brandon: If possible, learn from a mentor and build the brand together with him/her. You must also enjoy what you are doing in order to continue in the long run.

What was the biggest challenge for you in your career?

Brandon: The biggest challenge for me in my career would be juggling between work and my family, fiancée and friends. On weekdays, I would usually be clearing backlogs, otherwise doing pre-wedding shoots and shoots that are not wedding related. I also have to meet clients after their working hours in the evening. On weekends, I would usually be out for Actual Day wedding shoots.

What are some of the Canon camera and lens models you’d recommend for someone who wishes to turn photography into a full-time job?

Brandon: Canon EOS R with prime lenses such as EF/RF24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm.

Any tips for a pre-wedding shoot?

Brandon: It is always about the couple and their love story. Their experience during the photoshoot is as important as the photos delivered at the end of the day.

Not every Singaporean wedding is like the one featured in the movie Crazy Rich Asians – a unique scene with palm trees, water and over-the-top bespoke setting. While most wedding ceremonies are held in private function rooms/restaurants/churches, pre-wedding shoots are where the fun is. Wedding photographers usually hold a brief discussion on the wedding couple’s vision – the wedding theme, dream locations and wet tropical weather contingency plans.

Some pre-wedding photography trends in Singapore include:

  • night shoot with fairy lights
  • sparklers or light painting
  • iconic old-school locations (e.g.: playground/void deck)
  • street style photography;
  • drone photography
  • overseas locations (iconic spots or dramatic landscapes).

Most importantly, get to know your wedding couple to discover their special story, and the location will follow.
