It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Check out how this magical festive season is celebrated in Southeast Asia from the eyes of 3 photographers and their imagery.

MANILA, THE PHILIPPINES
Photographer: Jijo de Guzman

“Known as ‘parol’ in the Philippines, these colourful lanterns adorn the facades of many Filipino homes during Christmas season. Made out of capiz shells, the protective shell of a type of mollusc, or windowpane oysters, they come in an assortment of designs and sizes and are usually sold along some of the busy streets of Manila and in other cities around the country during this season. Even foreign visitors buy and bring them home to their respective countries. Here, a young vendor tends to his display to attract passersby.”

PENANG, MALAYSIA
Photographer: Keith Liew

“Penang is one of Malaysia’s most multicultural states. For the past few years, the locals also known as Penangites, have changed the way on Christmas is celebrated. Nowadays, there are plenty of events happening in town at this time, such as Christmas hotel buffets, beautiful decorations and festive shows organised in the shopping malls, parties and countdowns in clubs and bars. Just check out this amazing Christmas tree display at Queensbay Mall in Penang, a treat for those who celebrate this holiday.”

It’s like a light party - locals and tourists alike enjoy walking down the city’s streets to check out all the cheerful illumination. You could even hear the echo of stories from friends, family as they gather. One could say the Christmas lights simply adds on more happiness to those stories.”
