MANILA, THE PHILIPPINES
Photographer: Jijo de Guzman
“Known as ‘parol’ in the Philippines, these colourful lanterns adorn the facades of many Filipino homes during Christmas season. Made out of capiz shells, the protective shell of a type of mollusc, or windowpane oysters, they come in an assortment of designs and sizes and are usually sold along some of the busy streets of Manila and in other cities around the country during this season. Even foreign visitors buy and bring them home to their respective countries. Here, a young vendor tends to his display to attract passersby.”
