An Immersive Shooting Experience Awaits with the All-New EOS R

EOS R with 54mm diameter mount and 12-pin contact

5th September, 2018 – Canon announced the launch of the EOS R, a full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens digital camera equipped with an RF Mount as part of the EOS R System.

Superlative Image Quality and Rich Expression through RF

Through the combination of high-performance RF lenses, a 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor with approximately 30.3 million effective pixels1 and the latest DIGIC 8 image processor, the EOS R allows highly expressive, high image-quality shooting. The EOS R is equipped with Digital Lens Optimizer, which corrects for such factors as diffraction and lens aberrations. RF lenses automatically send data necessary for corrections to the camera body to enable corrections without needing to preregister the lens data on the camera via a PC. The EOS R does the corrections without impacting continuous shooting speed2 with the DIGIC 8 image processor.

Achieving a standard ISO sensitivity range of 100–40000, the EOS R makes possible high image-quality shooting even in such low-light scenes as indoors and night time. When using AF/AE (Autofocus and Auto exposure) together, the camera achieves continuous shooting speeds of approximately 5 fps, and achieves approximately 8 fps with AF/AE locked3. Using one of four dedicated mount adapters, EOS R provides the flexibility of using existing EF and EF-S lenses4, in addition to the newly developed RF lenses.

The EOS R achieves image stabilization equivalent to a maximum of five shutter speed stops5 for stills shooting with Dual Sensing IS6, which detects camera shake with high accuracy. Attaining image information from the image sensor and the lens’s gyro sensor7, the camera can accurately detect low-frequency vibrations that cannot be detected by the gyro sensor alone to make optimal correction possible through improvements in the shake detection algorithm,

Dual Pixel CMOS AF for a wide range of shooting scenarios

Through Dual Pixel CMOS AF, in which each effective pixel on the CMOS sensor performs both phase-difference autofocusing and imaging functions, and the optimization of RF lens drive controls, the EOS R achieves focus speeds as short as approximately 0.05 seconds8. Paired with compatible lenses, the camera achieves an expanded focus area9 of approximately 100% (vertically) x 88% (horizontally). What’s more, when selecting AF points using the directional keypad, users can choose from as many as 5,655 selectable points10, enabling greater composition freedom when shooting.

The EOS R achieves an EOS-series-first low-light focusing limit of EV-611 at the central focus point, providing highly precise focusing even in low-light scenarios where distinguishing subjects would be difficult for the human eye. Apart from monitoring photographic subjects, the camera obtains distance information for the surrounding area in real time and uses the resulting depth information to improve tracking performance. What’s more, the EOS R features Eye Detection AF12, which can detect and focus on the subject’s pupil. The function is ideal for portrait shooting, which demands stringent focusing accuracy.

Comfort and Operability through the Viewfinder

The EOS R features a built-in high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF) with approximately 100% coverage that employs an approximately 3.69-million-dot OLED panel. The camera features a multi-function bar on its back, an EOS-series first, that enables both tap and slide operations, allowing quiet shooting adjustments. The EVF allows users to confirm the effects of their chosen shooting settings and when combined with the multifunction bar, a sub-electronic dial on top and the control ring on RF lenses, users can adjust settings effectively while shooting without having to take their eyes off of their subject.

Intuitive high-resolution EVF on the EOS R

The EOS R is the first Canon camera to feature an FV (flexible AE) exposure mode, where exposure settings as shutter speed, aperture and ISO sensitivity allow could be toggled between AUTO and direct adjustment in a single mode. With FV mode, users can freely change exposure settings while looking through the viewfinder without having to change exposure modes in the traditional manner via the mode dial or the camera’s LCD screen.

Video functions for professional-quality shooting

The EOS R provides 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) video capture and a 4K frame capture function, grabbing selected frames as still images from recorded 4K video. The camera supports Canon’s proprietary Canon Log log gamma, which has proven results with the Cinema EOS System of video production equipment. Video captured with Canon Log delivers a great degree of freedom during post-shoot processing and colour grading, rich video expression can be achieved through subtle details of highlights and shadows.

The EOS R is capable of displaying 4K video on external devices through a HDMI terminal. When using Canon Log, the camera can output video with a rich gradation (10-bit output) and a wide colour gamut (next-generation broadcasting standard ITU-R BT.2020).

When paired with compatible lenses13, the EOS R utilises Combination IS, which combines in-body 5-axis electronic stabilization from the camera and optical stabilization from the lens to deliver video with minimal hand shake even when shooting in an unstable position or while walking.

Proprietary Canon applications for rich photographic expression

Canon’s proprietary Digital Photo Professional14 RAW image software can display still images using PQ (Perceptual Quantization)15, a HDR format targeting movie production and distribution. The software allows the editing and display16 of high-quality images with a wide dynamic range—the contrast between light and dark values of an image.

Communication between proprietary Canon input and output solutions has been improved. Using Professional Print Layout17, High-quality images created using Digital Photo Professional can be printed while maintaining such qualities as gradient. Using the HDR print function, the highlight areas of the image can be richly recreated. What’s more, using the Exhibition Lighting Optimization function, prints can be output that when combined with bright lighting achieve an expanded dynamic range.

With DPRAW Print, using the subject depth information contained in Dual Pixel RAW files, higher quality prints that achieve feeling of depth can be output.
