How To Live Stream Like a Pro With The PowerShot G7 X Mark III

Boasting powerful 20MP CMOS sensors and uncropped 30fps 4K and 120fps 1080p video recordings, the compact but powerful Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III is the only tool you’ll need (and maybe a ring light) to take your live streams to the next level.

Whether you’re a seasoned YouTuber looking to up your live stream game or a working professional who just can’t rely on poor quality web cameras anymore, you’ll be glad to know that live streaming is a breeze with the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III. In fact, this nifty camera has been called a “blogger’s dream” by top photography lifestyle review sites, and here’s why.

Streaming made convenient

Its powerful features aside, you’ll be glad to know that the camera allows you to live stream directly to your YouTube channel simply by connecting to your Wi-Fi network and using the pre-installed YouTube streaming application. Do note that you’ll only be able to do a direct live stream if your YouTube account has more than 1,000 subscribers. If you have a smaller audience, you’ll want to use the EOS Webcam Utility. This basically acts as a driver and replaces your webcam with your PowerShot G7 X Mark III (or any other compatible Canon camera) and allows you to connect to other web conferencing platforms such as Zoom, Skype, Facebook Live, Microsoft Teams, Slack, and more.

Pre-set up checklist

Before you stream, you'll need to make sure you have these 5 items ready:

  • A Google account with your YouTube Channel
  • YouTube live stream verified
  • Canon image.canon account
  • A stable internet connection
  • Your camera’s date and time set up

Setting up Live Stream

Step #1 Setting up your Wi-Fi for the first time

  • Turn on your camera using the On/Off switch
  • Press the MENU button and scroll to the WIRELESS tab using your control dial
  • Scroll down to NICKNAME and press SET
  • Give your camera a nickname and press MENU/OK to Save. Press OK to confirm
  • Ensure that your Wi-Fi is enabled by scrolling to Wi-Fi Settings and pressing the SET button
  • Select ENABLE and press SET

Step #2 Pair your PowerShot G7 X Mark III with image.canon

  • Press the Wi-Fi button on your camera
  • Select the Wi-Fi icon (a cloud)
  • To configure link settings, be sure you are able to operate your camera and a browser (desktop, tablet or smartphone) simultaneously. Click ‘I Agree’ to start
  • Select your Wi-Fi network and press the SET button. Enter your Wi-Fi password
  • Select ‘Auto Settings’ or ‘Manual Settings’ and enter your IP address settings - please refer to your Wi-Fi administrator to get this information. Press SET to confirm
  • Enter a valid email address and select MENU/OK. Press the SET button
  • Choose and enter a 4-digit PIN (this is required to temporarily establish a link later on). Press OK
  • Read notifications and select OK
  • Check your email - you should have received a confirmation email. Click the link within the email to access Camera Link Settings

Step #3 Set up your image.canon account

  • On screen, enter the 4-digit PIN you already created
  • Enter your Canon ID. If you don’t have one, register to image.canon using your email address
  • Fill in the entry fields and Create My Account
  • Choose to subscribe to Canon’s marketing emails or not, and click Confirm
  • Check both the Terms of Use and Cookie Policy boxes and select ‘I Agree’
  • Select Back to Top Page

Step #4 Add your YouTube account to image.canon

  • In the YouTube box, Click on Confirm Privacy Policy, followed by Connect
  • Sign in to your YouTube account (or create one if you don’t have one)
  • Allow image.canon to access your Google account

Step #5 Sync your camera with image.canon account

  • Click Update Web Services icon on your PowerShot G7 X Mark III
  • The live stream icon should now be displayed on your camera

Step #6 Enabling Live Stream in YouTube on your browser

  • Type https://studio.youtube.com/ on your internet browser. Log in to your YouTube account
  • Click on Create at the top right corner of your window and Go live in the drop-down menu and select Schedule Stream

Note: If this is disabled, click on Enable Now. You might need to verify your YouTube account, and if there is a need to do so, please follow instructions on how to verify your account and allow up to 24 hours for the live streaming feature on YouTube to be enabled before you can use the PowerShot G7 X Mark III to live stream onto YouTube.

Once your account is ready to live stream, your live stream dashboard will display the following:

You are now ready to live stream! You are ready to start live streaming anytime you activate the live stream feature in your PowerShot G7 X Mark III. You can inform your audience by scheduling a live stream event at a time of your choosing.

Step #7 Scheduling your stream on YouTube

  • Click on Create at the top right corner of your window and Go live in the drop-down menu
  • Select Schedule Stream
  • Fill in the relevant details, such as the title, time, description, and click Create Stream

Note: For more information on the different types of Live Stream, kindly refer to https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853848?hl=en

Step #8 Finally, Live Streaming on your PowerShot G7 X Mark III

  • Press the Wi-Fi button
  • Select the Live Streaming icon on the camera
  • Select I Agree
  • Select Events
  • Select the event you previously scheduled on YouTube (step #7)
  • Press OK to continue
  • To start your stream, hit the Movie Record button on either the camera body or on the screen
  • Select LIVE to start streaming at the scheduled time (based on your "Event" settings in YouTube)
  • Lights, camera, action! You are now live

 Live Streaming tips

Creating a great stream is more than just about nailing the technical aspects– here are some lifestyle tips to consider for making your stream more professional.

  • Wear an outfit that doesn’t match your background. If your wall is white, pick a top that contrasts so you don’t blend into the background.
  • While streaming, look directly at the camera to give your viewers a true sense of connection. This comes with practice but rehearsing before your stream will help you not look at your notes as much.
  • If your room doesn’t get much natural lighting, consider getting a ring light. The added light will smoothen out your complexion and add a nice light to your eyes.
  • Do not stream with a light source directly behind you as it will throw you into the shadows.
  • Depending on the nature of your content, adding some relevant props to the background can help make your video look more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Most importantly, have fun and don’t stress too much about getting a perfect stream! This comes with practice and you’ll find that your audience resonates better when you’re natural.

Powerful specs combined with the in-built live stream function makes the Canon Powershot G7 X Mark III a must-have in your live stream arsenal.
