How to Create Your Own Makeup Tutorial
Creating a makeup tutorial video is more than just powering up your camera and shoot right away. It takes planning, a great deal of preparation, and the appropriate equipment to get the right framing, angles, and light. For aspiring YouTubers and makeup enthusiasts, here are five tips to help you get started.
1. Setup and background
Make sure that the setting of your shoot is clean and tidy. A messy background distracts your viewers and may even affect your audience retention rate. You would want your content to be engaging, and have the viewers focus on you instead of something else.
2. Camera equipment and angles
Investing in a good set of equipment can help improve the quality of your video and smoothen your workflow. We recommend the Canon EOS M100 mirrorless camera, a lightweight and powerful camera that comes with a DIGIC 7 image processor and 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor to help you capture high quality videos and photos. The camera is packed with a host of features such as a 180-degree tilt-up LCD touch screen, full HD 60p video recording capability, in-camera Combination IS function to correct camera shakes, and Wi-Fi function to help you transfer your files wirelessly. Use a tripod to hold your camera steady and adjust the angle according to your table height.
3. Lighting
Lighting is one of the most important factors in photography and videography. When setting up the shoot, make sure that your room is well-lit. Natural light works well when you have a huge window with plenty of sunlight coming through. Alternatively, use a ring light to help illuminate your set.
4. Focusing
Focusing can be tricky when shooting a makeup tutorial because there is a need to focus on your face, and sometimes on the product you are using. With Canon EOS M100’s fast autofocusing speed, changing your focusing points is automatic and effortless.
5. Planning the makeup steps
To save time and ensure a smoother workflow for your video shoot, organise your makeup kit in the correct sequence. Plan the tools according to the makeup steps you intend to show in your video. E.g. from prepping, priming, to foundation and so on.
