As the latest successor in the popular EOS 5D series of full-frame cameras, the EOS 5D Mark IV is not only equipped with the versatility and high performance true to its EOS 5D lineage, but also makes accessible some of the key movie shooting features well-loved on the flagship EOS-1D X Mark II, such as the 4K, High Frame Rate, HDR and Time Lapse Movie recording modes and the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system. In this article, we take a closer look at what this power-packed arsenal is capable of in actual use!

Dazzling, detailed footage in 4K format

For an idea of what this latest successor to the revered EOS 5D series is capable of, take a look at the following video clip, which was shot entirely on the EOS 5D Mark IV in DCI 4K format. The stunning image resolution and cinematic, seamless footage was no doubt made possible by the 30.4-megapixel CMOS sensor, DIGIC 6+ image processor, and the powerful Dual Pixel CMOS AF and subject tracking system. The latter is important to ensure smooth focusing, particularly when recording movies in a resolution as high as 4K.

Packed with features that aid achievement of ideal footage

Stunning image resolution and footage quality are only the tip of the iceberg. As this behind the scenes video of “Trip to the Beach”  reveals, the EOS 5D Mark IV is full of features that aid filmmakers during the filming process, such as Touch AF for easy autofocus operation; the accessible, high performing Movie Servo AF function that enables one-man-operation subject tracking; and the 4K Frame Grab feature, which allows the extraction of high quality (8.8-megapixel) images from 4K footage so that users can capture moments usually not possible.

Other notable movie modes and features

The EOS 5D Mark IV also boasts other movie shooting modes and features apart from those featured in the “Trip to the Beach” movie. Here are some of them.

High Frame Rate Movies

The EOS 5D Mark IV is also capable of shooting High Frame Rate movies of up to 120p at HD 1280 x 720 resolution. This makes it great not just for shooting crisp, sharp action scenes but also for producing smooth slow motion footage.

HDR Movies

With the HDR (high dynamic range) movie function, you can now shoot movies (at 30p) in a brightly-lit environment without having to worry about blowout.

It’s also easy to create your own time-lapse movies with the Time-lapse movie function, which can record the movies in either MOV or Full HD (ALL-I) format.
