Through this lens review series, you will learn how to build your own lens system as we go through the recommended lens for all APS-C users. In this article, we will focus on the high zoom EF-S18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (Reported by: Ryosuke Takahashi)

Versatile range of focal length allows flexibility in shooting different subjects

This super zoom lens boasts the highest zoom ratio of about 11x in the EF and EF-S lens series. Covering a wide focal length range from about 29 to 320mm, the EF-S18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS can be employed for different subject types. It comes in useful particularly when you do not want to carry several lenses with you, such as while you are out trekking or travelling. Two UD and two aspherical lens elements are used in the optical system, which favourably correct aberrations that are likely to occur on a super zoom lens. Meanwhile, the IS function, which provides a powerful correction effect equivalent to about four shutter-speed stops, makes the lens suitable especially for handheld shooting in the telephoto range.

At a Glance!

  1. Powerful zoom ratio of about 11x
  2. Equipped with the Image Stabilizer (IS) function

18 mm

FL: 18mm/ Program AE (1/320 sec., f/11)/ ISO 100/ WB: Auto

The powerful zoom ratio makes it ideal for taking street snaps. Details are sharply depicted, and the tonal range is also well spread for this shot taken at the wide-angle end.

200 mm

FL: 200mm/ Program AE (1/400 sec., f/6.3)/ ISO 400/ WB: Auto

The side portrait of a guard was captured from a slightly distant position. By enlarging the playback image on the LCD monitor, you can tell that the fur on the hat and the epaulet on the uniform are reproduced in fine detail.
