In this article:

In this series of articles, we will go through one by one, the recommended lens for all APS-C users. With it as a guide, you will be able to start building your own lens system. In this article, we will learn more about the standard prime lens EF40mm f/2.8 STM. (Reported by: Ryosuke Takahashi)

Compact and light design gives assurance to great mobility

The slimmest in the EF and EF-S lens series, the EF40mm f/2.8 STM is a pancake- type standard prime lens that weighs as light as the EF50mm f/1.8 II (approximately 130g). When attached to the EOS 100D for example, the total weight is only about 530g (including the battery). This makes the EF40mm f/2.8 STM one of the best option for compact and light APS-C EOS models in both size and weight, as it does not compromise the mobility of the camera. It is built in with an STM (Stepping Motor) to realize quiet and smooth AF operation, and has an angle of view equivalent to about 64mm in the 35mm format. This is an ideal lens to carry if you are thinking of taking photos on your way to or from work or school. I have a feeling that using this lens will help me discover new subjects.

At a Glance!

  1. Ultra-Slim at about 22.8mm
  2. Silent and smooth AF operation with STM

I found this basket of kiwi fruits at a market. The background is beautifully blurred and the texture of the was accurately reproduced.

f/5.6

I came across these beautifully painted tiles at the market and decided to take a picture of it. There were no distortion caused by aberrations and the colours of the tiles were also accurately reproduced.
