SINGHA SONGKRAN CHIANG MAI NIGHT RUN

  • Chiang Mai Zoo

5km, 10km, Half Marathon

Songkran, a festival marking the Thai New Year, is all about making a fresh start with a splash. Mong’s first run of the six takes her to the streets of Chiang Mai, where she finds herself running the course alongside local and international running enthusiasts.

What’s more, Mong will run the streets at night and attempt to conquer the 10.5km route up and down historic Sri Wichai Road on Doi Suthep, the prominent mountain that has culturally significant sites on its slopes such as the Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, one of northern Thailand’s most sacred Buddhist temples, and the Bhubing Palace.

Will Mong make a splash in her inaugural run?

Things to do

Relax at San Kamphaeng hot springs

A visit to San Kamphaeng hot springs is an excellent day trip idea to relax and unwind post-race. San Kamphaeng has two hot springs with temperatures of over 100 degrees Celsius. Its waters have high sulphur content, helpful in curing diseases and improving blood circulation. Also to be spotted: geysers sending jets of water and steam 20 metres into the air. Water in the springs is very hot that a must-do activity is to boil an egg! Buy eggs from booths at the entrance, hang your basket on one of the hooks surrounding the edges of the hot pool, and go soak your feet in the cooler pools while you wait. The place also offers facilities for foot soaking, traditional mineral baths and a mineral swimming pool, all set against lush greenery.

Explore Bua Tong a.k.a "Sticky Waterfalls"

One of the most unique places we’ve ever been to in Thailand is called Bua Tong, nicknamed “Sticky Waterfalls” because the limestone rock creates enough friction to stop visitors from slipping. Located about an hour and a half drive north of Chiang Mai’s Old City, these multi-tiered waterfalls are not only impressive and gorgeous, but their “stickiness” allows visitors to climb easily up the rocks and cascading water without the help of ropes. Meanwhile, the not-so-adventurous can explore the area, picnic spots and restaurants surrounding Bua Tong.

Cliff jump in Hang Dong Canyon

Hang Dong Canyon, also known as Grand Canyon, is located less than an hour from the center of Chiang Mai. A former quarry turned into a stunningly beautiful location, Grand Canyon is perfect for adventure seekers looking to try cliff jumping (they have heights for all confidence levels!). For a more relaxing day out, you can rent an inner tube, sunbathe and lounge for hours. An on-site restaurant serves ice cream, beer and freshly barbecued chicken – perfect for sunny day out.
