If there’s something about wide open spaces and nature in all its beauty that just draw you in, then landscape photography is your preferred genre of photography. Master the art of landscape photography with these simple tips to help you shoot stunning photos for Instagram.
Use The Right Equipment
When it comes to landscape photos, creating images of the best quality is paramount. And using the right gear will make a difference in your photos. With its 24.1 megapixels APS-C CMOS sensor and a newly incorporated DIGIC 8 image processor, the EOS M50 enables you to shoot landscape photos with refined details and superior colour reproduction. Include a wide-angle lens like EF-M11-22mm f/4.5-6 IS STM, a tripod to keep your camera steady, and Neutral Density(ND) filters to help prevent overexposure.
Shoot During The Golden Hour
The magical hour before the sun sets is the very best time of day to shoot. And this quality of light can create a dramatic environment to help you capture breathtaking landscape photos. You can also get creative with silhouettes, shadows, sunset shots and angles. Can only shoot at night? The EOS M50 features an ISO of 25600, expandable to 51200, to give you the freedom to shoot detailed images even under low-light conditions.
Watch Your Composition
As social platforms are about telling a visual story, your photo’s composition is how you tell that story. It’s important to have a main focal point as this draws your viewer’s eyes to the most important part of the image or the area you want to highlight. Apply Rule of Thirds to help you create emphasis on your subject – the landscape itself. Or identify leading lines like a road or the horizon to create a flow that guides your viewer’s eye towards the subject.
Find A Wide Backdrop
If you’re shooting from a high vantage point, keep a moderate amount of sky to showcase the landscape’s unique features. Or create bold landscape photos by shooting from a low angle. Remember to shoot at as wide an angle as you can while maintaining the balance in the image. To enable you to shoot from various shooting positions, the EOS M50 features a Vari-angle LCD monitor for easier low-angle and high-angle shooting – even as you’re holding the camera in a vertical orientation.
Create Perspective With People
Adding a human, or yourself, into your landscape photos subliminally invites your viewer to step into the scene and feel as if they’re right there. It also gives your viewer’s eyes somewhere to rest. Tip: Look out for bright and vibrant clothing as it helps clearly define the subject to stand out in the landscape. To include yourself in the photos, set your camera on a tripod and use the Canon Camera Connect App. Then adjust your camera’s most frequently used settings depending on the surrounding conditions, without having to manually adjust it on your camera.
Master Depth Of Field
Depth of field is key to capturing stunning landscape photos. While most photographers use a greater depth of field to ensure the majority of the photo is sharp, a shallow depth of field can produce dreamy landscape photos. Use a shallow depth of field to isolate the subject and keep it sharp, while the rest of the photo is blurred. Remember the smaller the aperture, the greater the depth of field.
