In this series of articles which we will go through talks about the recommended lens suitable for all APS-C users. With it as a guide, you will be able to start building your own lens system. In this article, we will learn more about the macro lens EF100mm f/2.8 Macro IS USM. (Reported by: Ryosuke Takahashi)

Top in the macro lens lineup equipped with the Hybrid IS

A top-class lens among the EF series in both performance and popularity, the EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM can be used as a mid-telephoto macro lens with an angle of view equivalent to about 160mm in the 35mm format. It is capable of correcting two types of shake at the same time, including angular shake that occurs during normal shooting, as well as shift shake that macro shots are susceptible to. The IS function offers a correction effect equivalent to about four shutter-speed stops in normal shooting, and about two stops in macro photography. By utilizing the long focal length, you can capture small animals which tend to escape if you move too close to them, or a flower from outside a flowerbed.

At a Glance!

  1. Corrects two types of shake at the same time
  2. Uncompromisingly high image quality

f/2.8

FL: 100mm/ Aperture-priority AE (1/125 sec., f/2.8)/ ISO 100/ WB: Auto

I took a handheld shot of this vivid, intriguingly-shaped flower. While minute vibrations tend to occur inside the viewfinder when you are taking a macro photo, these were magically eliminated. The viewfinder image appeared so stable as if the camera was mounted on a tripod.

f/8

FL: 100mm/ Aperture-priority AE (1/50 sec., f/8, -0.7EV)/ ISO 6400/ WB: Auto

This lens can be used to produce a sharp quality as a medium telephoto lens. In the example above, it is a wooden relief on the wall of a church. The surroundings were almost pitch dark, but camera shake was effectively reduced with the help of the powerful Hybrid IS function.
