Released in June 2017, the new EOS 200D is a lightweight camera that is ideal for travel and street photography. In this article, let us take a look at the photographic capabilities of this camera through shots of the scenic landscapes which I captured during my visit to Istanbul and Cappadocia. Compact size and photographic capability ideal for travel and street photography

I went on an overseas trip with three lightweight EF lenses and the EOS 200D, which has undergone major advancements while maintaining a light weight and compact size. The destinations of this trip were Istanbul and Cappadocia in Turkey. Instead of deciding on the subjects to photograph in advance, I decided to walk around, going wherever I felt like going and snapping photos of subjects that I felt like capturing.

As I was wandering around the Grand Bazaar, I chanced upon a quiet location that was brightened by the sunlight. The latest DIGIC 7 image processor offers excellent gradation control of the shadowed areas even for scenes where there is a huge contrast in brightness.

 

The greatest advantage of carrying the EOS 200D with me on the trip was none other than its compact size and light weight. During the journey, which lasted for eight days and seven nights with the temperature hovering above 30°C, I sometimes had to walk more than 10km. Nonetheless, I was able to complete the trip without letting the heat get to me, and I believe it was because I chose the EOS 200D to be my companion. I only realised later that I had taken about 1,000 shots every day on average. It was as though the camera had become a part of my body.

Not only is the camera light, it is also equipped with a DIGIC 7 image processor and a 24.2-megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor, both of which are employed on Canon’s high-end models. For these reasons, the EOS 200D was able to depict the streetscapes and nature of Istanbul – a UNESCO World Heritage site – to the fullest extent, delivering a level of image quality that surpasses that of entry-level DSLRs. This camera makes me realise the importance of mobility in travel and street photography.

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) is said to be the most beautiful mosque in the world. With the compact EOS 200D, changing lenses while you are out on a shoot becomes a rather stress-free situation. The scale of the mosque is so overwhelming that it cannot be conveyed without an ultra-wide angle lens.

The Bosphorus, a strait that connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, takes on a beautiful turquoise blue. Here, I set the Picture Style to Landscape to emphasize the blueness of the sea and the sky and create a contrast with the red colour of the yacht and the townscape.

The Uchisar Castle in Cappadocia was built by carving the soft tuff rocks. The carved holes on the surface of the rocks were faithfully reproduced, thanks to the 24.2-megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor.

From the shade of one of the odd-shaped rocks that Cappadocia is famous for, I took a shot of the hot-air balloons in the early morning. The entry-level EOS 200D was able to accurately record the image data without blowout despite the huge contrast in brightness in a scene like this.
