The EOS M6 is the latest model in Canon’s mirrorless lineup, boasting a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor with Dual Pixel AF, and WiFi, NFC and Bluetooth capabilities in a light, compact body featuring a handy flip screen. No wonder it’s touted as the photographer’s traveling sidekick. This time, we take the EOS M6 to the markets of Hong Kong, in the hands of photographer Prashant Ashoka.

We know Hong Kong as a bustling, vibrant cosmopolitan city bedazzled with neon signage, cherry red taxis and luxury malls filled with fashion from around the world. It’s real charm however, lies in the Hong Kong of yesteryear.

A vendor displays fresh seafood in colourful containers. Hong Kong is one of the world’s largest port-cities where Cantonese-style seafood is tradition.

Kowloon City Wet Market is teeming with life, colour and sounds as butchers sell fresh meat to the local residents. The famous wet market is home to 581 stalls and is one of the largest in Hong Kong.

A study of contrasts: 2 bored shop keepers entertain themselves with juxtaposing forms of media, a newspaper and a phone amidst a traditional dried goods store.

More than just a condiment, in Chinese cuisine pretty much everything can be pickled. You’ll come across many stores that sell dried goods and preserved food that are patronized even by the younger generation.

Women crowd around a local produce store and haggle with the shopkeeper. These stalls are scattered around Hong Kong, from regular shopping streets to markets.

Man Wa Lane, also commonly known as Chop Alley, is a lane in Sheung Wan that spans from Bonham Strand to Connaught Road Central. The lane is famous for stalls of chop-makers, who make chops ranging from traditional Chinese seals to modern rubber stamps. Some stalls also offer services to print various cards.

Hong Kong might be famous for its malls and shopping, but you might have more fun, get a better feel for the place at its quirky market stalls. There just might be a good bargain waiting to be had too!

I always find that markets are a great place to go to if you’re looking to photograph a city. Food is such a central element in many cultures, and you’ll see so much walking through wet markets.
