EOS R100: Back to the Basics

On 24 May 2023, Canon announced the EOS R100, a new entry camera model for the EOS R system. The new camera inherits the high image quality and optical design of other EOS R series cameras, with simpler features that provide ease of use within a smaller, lighter, and more budget-friendly body.

In this article:

1. A small mirrorless camera that keeps things simple

A point-and-shoot mirrorless that keeps things simple

The EOS R system has grown tremendously since its debut five years ago, and now consists of a rich selection of models that cater to different photographers, ranging from professionals who require unparalleled speed and reliability to enthusiasts looking for feature-packed functionality with the best affordability. The EOS R100 adds to that rich selection, providing an option that will appeal to those who want it even simpler: it puts the benefits of the RF mount into a small, no-frills body.

Beautiful, high-quality images and videos, interchangeable lens flexibility—sometimes, that’s all we ask for, and the EOS R100 provides accordingly.

At first glance, the EOS R100 closely resembles the EOS R50. They are around the same size, with the EOS R100 weighing around 19g lighter. In fact, the EOS R100 is Canon’s lightest camera model in the EOS R system lineup, weighing only around 486g (including battery and SD card) with the RF-S18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM kit lens (approx.130g).

The largest differences are in the rear LCD monitor (fixed on the EOS R100, Vari-angle on the EOS R50) and hot shoe, which is the traditional 5-pin type instead of the multi-function shoe found on the EOS R50 and other recent EOS R series camera models. This makes it compatible with older external flashes such as the tiny, affordable Speedlite EL-100, as well as third-party accessories. The battery is the LP-E17, also used by other EOS entry camera models such as the EOS 200D II*.

*USB charging and power supply are not supported.

2. Excellent imaging technology, beautiful pictures

Beautiful pictures through excellent imaging technology

The EOS R100’s simpler features do not detract from its excellent quality: it benefits from the RF mount, which has a short back focus distance that improves image quality and enables greater lens design flexibility. It also features a 24.1-megapixel APS-C format image sensor, which is three times larger than the typical smartphone sensor that captures ample information and detail. These two combined deliver beautiful images straight out of the camera—including beautiful, natural optical bokeh (background blur) effects. The excellent noise-processing capabilities of the DIGIC 8 image processor ensure clean images with minimal image grain, even during high ISO speed shooting under dim lighting.

3. Fast, precise autofocusing with Eye and Face Detection

Nail the focus in everyday scenes

The EOS R100 features Canon’s unique Dual Pixel CMOS AF, an image sensor-based phase detection system where every image sensor pixel is capable of both imaging and focus detection. This enables quick, steady focus acquisition and tracking over almost the entire image area.

On the EOS R100, maximum AF coverage is as large as up to around 88% x 100% (horizontal x vertical) of the image area*. This area is divided into up to 143 zones for more efficient and accurate focus acquisition.

*On a compatible lens. AF area size may vary for some lenses.

While the EOS R100 does not feature deep learning technology, it is capable of eye and face detection, which helps you nail the focus on human subjects quickly and easily. As the image shows, this is true even for subjects  smaller in the frame or further away. Perfect for travel portraits or full-body OOTD shots!

Continuous shooting: Just enough for everyday action

In One Shot AF mode, the EOS R100 shoots up to 6.5 frames per second (fps), sufficient for capturing fleeting candid facial expressions. In Servo AF mode, which continuously focuses on subjects in motion, the camera shoots up to 3.5 fps. Eyes are tracked too, so that mischievous glint in your toddler’s eyes will always be in sharp focus!

*The actual continuous shooting speed depends on various factors such as battery remaining charge, temperature, built-in Wi-Fi (‘On’ or ‘Off’), shutter speed, aperture value, type of lens, etc. For more information, please refer to the user manual.

4. 4K video, slow motion HD 120p

4K video, slow motion HD 120p

The EOS R100 offers high-definition cropped 4K UHD recording capabilities so that you can preserve memorable sights and sounds as high-resolution footage, or get closer to subjects using the narrower angle of view provided. For a wider angle of view, shoot in Full HD or HD. The High Frame Rate 120/100p shooting mode is also available in HD, letting you achieve seamless 5x slow motion effects when you shoot at 120p and render the video in 24p.

Vertical videos are tagged with position information, so they automatically play in the correct orientation on compatible players and applications.

The precise tracking abilities of Dual Pixel CMOS AF are available during Full HD/HD recording.

Additionally, the EOS R100 also features Movie Digital IS, which digitally performs 5-axis image stabilisation on video using information from built-in gyro sensors. This enables stabler handheld footage when shooting while walking, even when using lenses without built-in image stabilisation (Optical IS). With lenses with built-in image stabilisation, the stabilisation effect is increased through coordination between the lens and camera body IS systems.

Other video creation tools
- Timelapse movie function: Takes still shots at predetermined intervals for a predetermined duration and stitches them into a video.
- Hybrid Auto Mode: Captures short clips of the moments before each shot and combines the images and short clips into a digest movie.

5. Easy wireless connectivity

Upload to social media on the spot

The EOS R100’s built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity allow the easy transfer of images and videos from your camera to a paired smartphone via the free-to-use Camera Connect app. No internet connection or wires are required, so transfer can be done on the spot or on the way home from your shoot. You can even use your smartphone to check and curate the images on your camera SD card, or edit RAW files with Creative Assist! From there, uploading your beautiful camera images onto social media is a breeze.

6. Other notable features

Other notable features

Built-in flash

The pop-up flash has a guide number of 6 (ISO 100, metres), and is useful for night portraits and other scenes where you need better lighting. You can adjust the flash output according to your needs.

5-pin hot shoe

For more powerful output, use an external flash. The traditional 5-pin hot shoe supports flashes such as Speedlite EL-100.
