Canon’s New EOS 6D Mark II: First EOS Full-Frame DSLR with Vari-angle Monitor
On 29 June 2017, Canon announced the EOS 6D Mark II, a DSLR camera with a 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor. Compact and lightweight, it is the very first EOS full-frame camera to be equipped with a Vari-angle monitor. (Reported by: Makoto Suzuki (Digital Camera Watch))

The EOS 6D Mark II features a full-frame CMOS sensor with 26.2 effective megapixels, and is the successor to the EOS 6D. The latter had made its debut in December 2012 as the lightest full-frame EOS DSLR at the time and the first to feature Wi-Fi connectivity. Its successor comes enhanced with a touch-operable Vari-angle LCD rear monitor.
The image processor used is DIGIC 7, which supports the EOS 6D Mark II’s broad ISO speed range of ISO 100 – 40000 (expandable to ISO 102400). Movies can be recorded in Full HD 50p/60p, supported by the addition of the new Movie digital IS feature, whereas time lapse movies can be recorded in 4K.
The AF system features 45 all cross-type AF points (with 27 points compatible with f/8) and a continuous shooting speed of up to 6.5 fps. It comes with the Smooth Zone AF feature (that debuted on the EOS M5) which enables the easier capture of subjects with unpredictable movement.
The EOS 6D Mark II features in-camera lens aberration correction, which allows users the option to enable and disable the correction of peripheral illumination, chromatic aberration, distortion and diffraction. Besides options such as Picture Style-Fine Detail and the Auto White Balance -White priority, it is also equipped with an anti-flicker feature and colour detection AF.
The viewfinder offers a field-of-view coverage of approximately 98% with magnification of approximately 0.71x. There is no built-in flash.
This camera is also the first full-frame camera to be equipped with a Vari-angle LCD monitor, which also features touchscreen functions to allow the operation of Touch AF and Touch Shutter. In Live View shooting, Dual Pixel CMOS AF is active, and the camera is also capable of handling continuous shooting at up to 4.0 fps with Servo AF.
In terms of connectivity, the camera supports Wi-Fi/NFC and Bluetooth low energy technology. The latter provides a constant, low-powered connection between the camera and a paired smartphone. Just like the EOS 6D, the EOS 6D Mark II has a built-in GPS function.
External dimensions are approximately 144 × 110.5 × 74.8mm, with a weight of approximately 765g including battery and memory card, and 685g (body only).
An optional battery grip, BG-E21, is available, sold separately.
