While travelling almost 12,000 kilometers and photographing non-stop for 20 days, I had the joy of testing the EOS R during a recent trip to the United States. After visiting iconic locations namely Death Valley, Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest of the Eastern Sierra, Mono Lake plus Glacier and Grand Teton National Parks, this is my experience with Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera.

Built for Travel and Outdoors

From the scorching heat of Death Valley to the freezing temperatures of Grand Teton National Park and everywhere in between, the EOS R performed without any problems. Thanks to its dust and drip-resistant weather sealing, the camera was able to operate in temperatures from as high as 42 degrees Celsius in Death Valley to as low as -6 degrees Celsius in Grand Teton.

Flexibility on the Field

The camera features a Vari-angle LCD screen that lets me shoot from different angles, whether I’m positioning the camera above the ground or at ground level. It’s especially handy for shooting low-angle perspectives as shown in the next image. 

Even when shooting from a lower angle, the screen enables me to view my composition and exposure correctly to capture the shot. This is illustrated perfectly through vertical shots, as most cameras would have screens that can tilt for horizontal shots. With the touch shutter function, I’m able to capture the shot easily by just tapping the screen.

If you are out on the field and need to swap lens in between shots, there is a higher chance of getting your camera’s sensors dirty, especially when using a mirrorless camera. What I like about the EOS R is that its sensor is protected from dust with a shutter curtain that automatically comes down when I turned it off, giving me peace of mind when changing lens.

Convenience of Customisation 

I love how the EOS R System is designed to complement and yet redefine the boundaries of photography. With the Canon EF-EOS R Mount Adapter, it gives me the flexibility of using EF or EF-S lens with the EOS R. While using the adapter, I noticed it didn’t affect the AF speed and image quality, proving Canon’s well-thought design.

Using the EF-EOS R Control Ring Mount Adapter takes customisation of settings to a new level. The addition of the control ring brings new ways to optimise your shooting workflow. I used the control ring to adjust my shutter speed when shooting landscapes and then switch it to control my aperture when shooting travel images.

After having tested the EOS R in tough environments, the camera has proven itself to be capable of going head-to-head with my existing gear. Thanks to its ergonomic design and resistant to dust and drip, it would be a welcome addition to my equipment.
